Neighborhood Watch – Gamble's Quail Family Painting on Reclaimed Washing Machine Top

Anyone who’s lived in the desert knows this look. You step outside with your morning coffee, and there’s a Gamble's quail dad standing guard with one big eye locked on you. The whole family is lined up behind him, peeking over the edge to see what you’re up to. Mom keeps an eye out from the back, and the little ones are mostly just curious, but Dad has made it very clear he’s in charge of security around here.

I painted this covey on a reclaimed washing machine top we found in Oregon last spring on our way to a festival. Its raised edge made the perfect lookout for these little busybodies. Painted with exterior paint and sealed with an outdoor-rated UV protectant, it’s ready to stand guard on your patio or by the front door.
